Llius H.M.
fka Laura Huertas Millan

Llius H.M. is an artist, filmmaker, and writer. She was born and raised in Bogota, Colombia, and has spent half of her life in Paris, France. Her moving image practice, created between these two countries, circulates within art spaces and cinema circuits. Her projects are haunted by geographical, economic, and cultural diaspora as a first-generation immigrant in Europe, her experiences growing up amidst Colombia's 1990s violence, and an unwavering passion for storytelling. Weaving together alternative ethnographies, ecology, fiction, and historical inquiries, her films offer sensuous and immersive experiences where aesthetics and politics are inseparable.

She holds a BA and MFA from the Beaux-Arts de Paris, a graduate degree from Le Fresnoy, and a PhD from PSL University (Beaux-Arts de Paris and ENS rue d'Ulm). Her practice-PhD research on "Ethnographic Fictions" led her to produce a series of films that have been showcased alongside her previous works in more than twenty retrospectives and focuses, in cinematheques (including Toronto's TIFF Lightbox, Harvard's Film Archive, Cinemateca de Bogota) and leading film festivals like Mar del Plata and Rencontres Internationales du Documentaire de Montreal (RIDM). Her films have been part of the official selections of film festivals such as the Berlinale, Toronto International Film Festival (Wavelengths), Rotterdam, the New York Film Festival, and Cinéma du Réel, and have received awards at the Locarno Film Festival, FIDMarseille, Doclisboa, and Videobrasil, among others.

Solo exhibitions featuring her work have been held at the MASP Sao Paulo, Maison des Arts de Malakoff, and Medellin's Modern Art Museum. Her practice has also been showcased and screened in art institutions such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Jeu de Paume, Guggenheim Museum in New York, and Times Art Berlin, as well as biennials like Sharjah, Liverpool, FRONT Triennial, BienalSur, Videobrasil, and Videonale. They are part of private and public collections, including Kadist, CNAP, Banco de la República de Colombia, CIFO, FRAC Lorraine, and others. Llius H.M. was shortlisted for the Future Generation Artist Prize (PinchukArtCenter, 2019). She was awarded an Emerging Artist Award by the Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO, 2018), a Salon de Montrouge- Hauts-de-Seine Prize, and the Biennale de la Jeune Création Grand Prix (2017). More recently, she was the first recipient of the Ulrike Crespo After Nature Prize (C/O Berlin and the Ulrike Crespo Foundation, 2023) and one was one of France’s Mondes Nouveaux Laureates (2021).

Llius H.M. has taught at the Escuela de Cine y Television de San Antonio de los Baños (Cuba), the Fine Arts of Cergy (ENSAPC), and the Pietzwart Institute, among others. Currently, she serves as the co-chair of the Film/Video department at Bard's MFA.
